Spanish Town was built in the 17th century by the Spanish emperor who ruled Jamaica at that time.
The Spanish influence is still visible with the footprints and architectural design all over the once capital. Even the names of the streets in Spanish Town still echo those sentiments and there are names of several communities in the area that were named after the emperor. Spanish Town was the commercial hub of the island during those times and now, this town is the only place in the world outside of London where you will see a stone and metal bridge built by the English in the 1800s which is considered to be an architectural marvel.
Next you will visit Emancipation Park for a look at its memorial statue. The park was built in 2002 to commemorate the end of slavery in Jamaica in 1808.
From here you’ll be taken to Devon House which was owned by the first Jamaican billionaire and is now a heritage protected site. Tour this beautiful house and its antique furnishings and browse the many shops then taste the world-famous Devon House I-scream. The 4th best ice-cream in the world.
